Students of all abilities and conditions are encouraged to explore the different postures at their own pace and according to their own bodies, becoming aware of what arises without judgment. Vinyasa, a Sanskrit word meaning “synchronized breath and movement,” is an improvised mix of sun salutations, standing and seating postures, meditation, chanting, and breathing practices (pranayama) that energizes the body and quiets the mind by using conscious breath (ujjayi) to flow dynamically from posture to posture through a variety of transitional movements.
Pilates were created by German-born Joseph Pilates, who was frail as a child and studied many different fitness disciplines to improve himself. He brought together ideas from areas such as yoga, Zen Buddhism and acrobatics to create his own fitness method during and after World War I.
Iyengar-Style Yoga is a kind of Hatha yoga, based on giving primary attention to the physical body alignment while performing classical poses. In the Iyengar yoga description, it is claimed that there exists a correct way to perform each pose, and every student will be able to accomplish perfect poses one day, if they dedicate themself truly to the consistent practice.
